Casa Alegre

Early intervention services for children ages birth to three years old. Casa Alegre provides services to children with developmental delays or who are at risk for delays due to medical or environmental conditions. It also provides:

  • service coordination
  • speech therapy
  • physical therapy
  • occupational therapy
  • nursing
  • social services
  • nutrition
  • family training

These services are provided at the home and/or the Casa Alegre Center.

Healthy Family Initiative

Socorro General Hospital’s

Healthy Family Initiative (Formally MCH)

 

Socorro General Hospital HFI is committed to the health and wellbeing of families in Socorro County.  Through community collaboration they are able to provide, both directly and indirectly, a variety of services.

 

•     Bilingual perinatal case management to Socorro County residents

•     Adolescent Risk Avoidance

•     Transportation services (Limited)

•     Parenting education and support through thirty six months

•     Low cost child safety seat education and seats

•     Tobacco Prevention Education and local classes

•     Statewide Youth Coalition Activities

•     Yearly Family Retreat

•     Sun Safety Education

•     Youth Advocacy 

 

HFI reported impact on Healthy Family Initiative in 2006 is as follows:

 

•     HFI case managed clients, 100% up-to-date on immunizations, 95% breastfed at least seven months, 100% enrolled under Medicaid, 85% of mothers contracepting, and Ages and Stages through 36 months.

•     Decreased teen birth rates since 2000 of 26.8%

•     Socorro County mothers have a higher level of prenatal care than mothers in other parts of state (PRAMS data)

•     Over 144 clients and families served directly through bilingual case manager

•     Over 16,000 individuals impacted through HFI educational opportunities

•     Over 965 individuals impacted by transportation services

Socorro General Hospital's HFI program has been working on teen pregnancy prevention since 1994 through a comprehensive community  approach involving parents, students, schools, community, and faith  community. The program emphasis is goal setting, healthy relationships, refusal skills, choices and consequences, and life promoting skills. Their program starts in the Second grade and are in 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 11th grades  in Socorro, 2nd , 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th in Magdalena.  6th , 8th , & 11th in Alamo with reinforcing assemblies for all middle and high school students prior to prom and homecoming.  Parents are the primary educators and HFI has programs to reach parents.

Literacy Volunteers of Socorro

Literacy Volunteers of Socorro, Inc. (LVS) is a fully integrated national network of local, state, and regional literacy providers that give adults and their families the opportunity to acquire skills to be effective in their roles as members of their families, communities, and workplaces. They provide student-focused tutoring, one-to-one or in small groups, at no charge to the student. Their mission is to change lives through literacy.
They offer:

  • Free ESL (English as a second language)
  • Pre-GED
  • Basic reading tutoring
  • Free vocational computer classes
  • Family literacy services.


LVS has 31 tutors and 40 students.

  • 195 hours have been put into ESL since July 1, 2003.
  • A group of adults comes from Tresco each Tuesday for tutoring.
  • LVS has five adults working in the schools tutoring children. They have put in 89 hours since the beginning of school.
  • LVS has had computer classes all fall. The next class will begin January 7th.
  • An LVS volunteer has been going to Evenstart and Alamo each month, talking to the parents about reading to their children, playing and singing with their children and being involved in their children’s education. LVS always gives a free children’s book.
  • LVS helped with the RIF program in October.
  • LVS did a workshop at Aim High to the GRADS program.
  • LVS attends Birthing classes at SGH giving talks on reading with children.

Puerto Seguro, Inc.

Day Shelter For The Homeless & Needy

 

Mission:  To combat homelessness and poverty by supporting those determined to create better lives for themselves

 

Puerto Seguro has been serving the needs of Socorro and the surrounding area since 2001.

Puerto Seguro has on average 30-50 client visits per day, three days a week.

In 2005, 322 individual clients were served, averaging 3 new clients each open day.

Puerto Seguro seeks to meet the immediate needs of our clients as well as long-term assistance in order to remedy the client’s individual needs.

 

Puerto Seguro, Inc (PSI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation chartered for the purpose of offering a  “safe place” where clients may use shower facilities, acquire clothing and food, and be connected with other service agencies that can provide help with housing, employment, education, GED testing, rehabilitation, counseling, medical, and other needs.  PSI does not charge for any service and is publicly supported.  PSI’s clients include men, women, and children of all ages including veterans.  PSI is a daytime facility only, but under some conditions and when funds are available, clients may receive temporary lodging at a local motel.

Socorro County DWI Program

The Socorro County DWI Council is established for the purpose of preparing comprehensive community DWI prevention and treatment plans for Socorro County. These plans shall address problems and issues related to:

Education programs in schools and work places

Public information activities aimed at the driving public

DWI enforcement activities

Other activities and programs aimed at reducing DWI related problems

Assisting the City of Socorro and Socorro County in the development of spending initiatives for grant monies related to DWI treatment and prevention.
