MINUTES (NOTE: SEE “ANNOUNCEMENTS” AT END OF
MINUTES)
1. New
Programs--Parenting
Tom Dean talked
about the family skills program that he had available. It has many components. He can target a population that doesn’t
duplicate what anyone else is doing.
He has talked to BGC, CYFD, and SMH re: their programs, but would like to
know what others are doing. He is
working with CYFD and Noe Lara is coordinating re: what population to
address.
BGC did
Strengthening Families with 6-8 year olds and 11 – 14 year olds, and their
families this year. Next year will
add 0 – 6 year olds.
MCH does a Family
Retreat that can complement other programs; contact her for more info. Does a parenting class with SPRANS money
for parents of kids 12 – 18; please refer parents. Does 2 guest speakers/year that other
p1rograms can encourage people to hear; one is coming up This Thursday, April
22—see “Announcements” below.
SMH was funded for
Dare To Be You family skills program with CYFD families for FY
05.
Beth Beers suggested
that, given all this activity in the area of parenting, all parties who are
involved in parenting/family skills programs should meet as a parenting
subcommittee, including CYFD, Even Start, Head Start, etc.
ACTION: Minda will coordinate a parenting
subcommittee meeting, to clarify who is doing what, identify ways to help each
other recruit and meet objectives, and identify any gaps, needs,
etc.
Head Start and Even
Start do parenting classes for parents of enrolled
preschoolers.
GRADS does
fatherhood program and parenting classes at Aim High.
New
Programs—Mentoring
Answer to the Crisis
is a mentoring program that recruits folks already working with kids--eg
teachers, school counselors, school resource officers, children’s case managers,
etc—to mentor kids weekly. The kids
are “pre-risk” & middle school aged.
The program includes 1:1 mentoring, community service, martial arts,
etc., for 1 year. The program kicks
off with a 1-week overnight camp at Brush Ranch in May. Right now expect to have 4 mentors and
10 kids (each mentor works with 2 or 3 kids.) The program is run via private donations
at this time.
Some of the Socorro
folks involved are Charles Rutta, Greg Valentino, Janet Ward, and Mike
Torres. Theresa Zortman, who came
from Albuquerque and is on the Board of Answer to the Crisis, presented the info
above. 401-1974 (was this Theresa’s
phone number?)
New
Programs—GREAT
Deputy Noah
Jaramillo was invited to come and coordinate his program, GREAT, with others
working with the same population at Sarracino (especially MCH, which also goes
into the 6th grade classes at Sarracino). GREAT is a gang resistance program. Deputy Jaramillo didn’t respond to this
invitation and did not attend this meeting. We will continue to invite him and hope
he can attend in the future, so that we can avoid duplication and make sure that
our programs are reinforcing each other.
2. FY 04 Resource Scan
A few more
corrections and additions were provided.
ACTION: Minda will revise the scan and e-mail it
to everyone so that all can use it.
3. FY 05 Resource Scan
All present provided
info for the FY 05 Resource Scan. A
few had not heard re: their funding for various proposed programs. The FY 05 Scan will provide an
opportunity to reach out to folks who have not been attending P.C.C. meetings
but have a big prevention role in the county, eg the
schools.
ACTION: Minda’s team will draft a FY 05 Resource
Scan and e-mail the draft to everyone, who then can add to or correct
it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
MCH is bringing a dynamic, entertaining
speaker to Sarracino. Teens
and their parents are invited for a free dinner at Sarracino cafeteria at 5, and
the talk in the auditorium from 6 to 8.
Luis Galdamez presents on Love/Amor, he “educates and inspires teens and
adults.”
BGC is doing summer lunch again this
year. This is an opportunity for
programs:
Greg Valentine is conducting a martial
arts class for kids aged 5 to 11.
It is on going. He teaches a Japanese style that is similar to aikido and
very good for learning self-control, physical control, centering, etc. He has
been doing it a NM Tech, but will look into a different site that might be less
intimidating and expensive for some families. For more info, contact him at home
(835-10640) after work hours.
